Semiotics

This week in class we learned about the concept of Semiotics. Semiotics is trying to find the relationship between things (ads, movies, etc.) It ends up being up to the viewer to figure out what the message is. This is broken down to 3 parts: the sign, the signifier, and the signified. The sign is the ad itself. The signifier is the how it's displayed. The signified is what the person takes away from it.

This poster for The Dark Knight Rises can be broken down into all 3. The sign is the movie itself. It's showing that Gotham City is on the brink of falling. The signifier is Gotham City. The city looks to be on the brink of falling. The signified is the the idea if Batman doesn't come back, Gotham City will fall to evil.
