To continue the theme of Semiotics, it's time to dive deeper into the concept by exploring 3 new areas of Semiotics, notably the denotation, the connotation and myth/ideology of any type of communication. This time I wanna take a look at the Iphone and pick it apart to show understanding of the concepts.
The denotation is the "starting point" or what you're looking at. Of course, this would be the Iphone itself. It's a slick looking device that has a touch screen that enables you to do other things besides talking on the phone (look at pictures, watch Youtube videos, etc.)
The connotation is the deeper meaning of the piece. More or less, what you get out of it. From the look of it, the Iphone is an impressive piece of technology that fits in the time we live in. It does things, like I mentioned above (looking at pictures, Youtube videos, etc.) It's basically a handheld computer.
The myth/ideology is both a connotation and denotation. It shows us something and it imposes it on us (connotative) and it notifys us (denotative.) The myth of the Iphone is that it can do pretty much anything technologically. Again, it's more or less a handheld computer. It also symbolizes the advancement in technology over the past decade. Cell phones have come a long way since the huge, clunky phones of the 90's.
Of course, this is how I perceive the Iphone. The great thing about Semiotics is that anybody can look at something (like the Iphone) and come up with their own ideas on what the piece of communication is trying to tell them.
