Character reveals are important in types of media like movies and comic books. It gives the viewer/reader a first glance of the character they're going to be spending a majority of their time with. A character reveal is often a good chance to show some character traits.
In Spiegelman's Maus, we are introduced to our main character, Vladek, through text. His son, Artie, is going to visit him at his home. When he gets there, Vladek is waiting and shows us many things about his character (he's impatient, he loves his son). As the story progresses, more of Vladek's character is revealed as he struggles to survive the Holocaust.
In Jeff Lemire's Essex County, however, the main character, Lester, is revealed differently. Lester doesn't speak very much throughout the story and he doesn't say much when he does speak. This makes it difficult to get to know Lester at first. Like the other characters in Essex County, Lester is revealed very slowly and slowly builds up his character.
