This week, I tackle an article about students not knowing what psychoanalysis is in media. The article can be found here if you want to read along. I am meant to comment on the article (which I'll get to as I move along.)
The article mentions (in brief) the Aliens saga. I have seen the first 3 Alien films (the 4th I heard was trash so I didn't see it) and I understand when someone is trying to psychoanalyze those movies. They are a very good study in masculinity in women. The article goes on to mention a business called Unilever, who deals with media studies. They use Ms. Pac Man as an example when it comes to psychoanalysis (they talk about how they answer the phone and someone wants to know the feminist point of view for Ms. Pac Man.) The article also goes into how students don't know much about media studies and how big a problem it is.
My overall view on the article is that it can be a problem that people don't study enough of media studies. If people actually took a media studies class, they may find it interesting or, maybe, major in media studies and learn more about it. It can really be interesting if you take the time to study a film and analysis it in a way. It's one of the more fun aspects of being in this field.
